How do I start? Practical guidelines for regular Bible reading

If you haven't been in the habit of reading the Bible regularly the prospect may be a little daunting. What's the point? How much time do I put aside each day? Does it matter if I miss a day or two?

Why should we read the Bible? Although it is good to be familiar with its content the main aim of regular Bible reading is not simply to amass information. It is in fact nothing less than to meet with God.

Most people find it helpful to come slowly and quietly into God’s presence before they start reading the Bible. Quality is more important that quantity in your time spent with God. Read with expectancy, believing that God wants to speak to you. When you come to a verse which rings bells for you, stop and meditate on it. Savour the implications of each phrase. Turn each into a
prayer.

It is good to have a time with God as part of our daily schedule. Try to find the time of day that suits you best and when you can be alone and undisturbed. It can be helpful to find a verse or two from your reading to reflect on while you are doing other things. Some people keep a notebook or journal to record things they discover in their regular time with God.

Many Christians find that using daily Bible reading notes helps them to be consistent in their time with God. With daily readings, comments and prayers they offer insights on the reading, stimulate our thinking and stir us to action. By investing time and effort in regular Bible reading we discover more about God and ourselves and how to live as Christians today.
